[edit] An Introduction To Traffic Generation

It is important to understand the concept of traffic before you try and bring people to your website. Whilst it is crucial to bring large numbers of people to your site, it is even more important to make sure that these people are targeted and information-hungry visitors. Without traffic your website can easily fall into obscurity so it's important to know as many different ways to generate traffic as possible.

[edit] Different Methods Of Traffic Generation

There are many ways to drive traffic; here is a small but not exhaustive list of methods with which you can bring large amounts of people to your website:

1. Directory Submission

2. Forum Posting

3. Comments On Blogs

4. Article Submission

5. Search Engine Optimization

6. Social Bookmarking

7. Viral Ebooks

You may not understand some of the methods listed above, in fact, most marketers don’t either, the important thing is to learn and hone your skills. One of the most important parts of traffic is understanding it as a concept, we have to bring targeted traffic and make sure that we are giving our traffic the best possible content. Your actual website and the content on that website is a key part of driving traffic, since without good solid content or an interesting product, people will not be partial to view your website.

[edit] Directory Submission

You can submit your site to multiple directories but I would not waste my time submitting to small or unpopular diretories. The big two that I would definitly go after are DMOZ and the yahoo directory. If you can manage to get your link placed in one of or both of these directories you will not regret it. It will increase your PR rank and grive a little traffic to your site. Also, other directories use DMOZ and Yahoo so if you can get you link in there you will have your link automatically submitted to thousands of other websites.

Take note that google frowns upon paid directories and paid link building. Ususally, if a website is well known for selling its webspace it will most likely not pass rank. It will not hurt your rank but you will not benefit from it.

[edit] Forum Posting and Blog Comments

You can quickly get the word out by making forums posts on other websites. This is probably one of the best ways to initially get the word out for your blog or website especially if the link is accompanied by an informative post. If the poster seems to know what he/she is talking about and knowledgable - visitors are more likely to click on your link and browse your website.

Web masters are really finicky about other links being placed on their forums or blogs so they usually have a rule setup to where links either do not get PR credit or you must be a nor mal visitor of the forum to post external links. Always check before writing a lengthy blog or forum entry. It may be time wasted and you really don't want that.

[edit] Article Submission

I'd say submitting articles is one of the hardest, slowest and expensive ways to build up one way links. Unlike blog and forum posts you must plan and research what you are going to write about and incorporate SEO in the article you are going to write. Submitting articles to high PR or high traffic websites provides high quality incoming links to your website. Google and other search engines like this. Not only does the artcle need to be on high quality websites it also must be interesting or filled with informative content to encourage reader to click on the link to your website. Normally, you would not submit articles to promote another article you would use articles to promote a website, blog or product. I have seen other articles promoting other articles but the article being promoted was highly encouraging users to sign up for something or buy a particular product.

Article must be spell checked and free of grammatical errors. Google checks for this and lowers the importance of the article or page there exists mispelled words grammatical mistakes.

[edit] Clever Marketing

Hundreds of internet marketers spend hours just trying to get a small number of first time visitors to their site. Are they making as much money as the major marketers? No. Why? Because they aren’t focussing on bringing back repeat visitors, it’s as simple as that.

The clever marketers spend at least 50% of their time trying to get people to come back to their websites. These repeat visitors are already familiar with your information or product and will keep coming back for more, often repeat visitors are the main traffic source for websites (for example, forums) and it is important that your content is good enough to make them come back, because in the long run this is how you will build up massive levels of traffic.

If you read anything online regarding traffic they will always tell you that targeted traffic is better than untargeted traffic. This is a good piece of information, but the really important thing you need to know is that there are two different types of targeted traffic. Let’s take a look at these:

1. People who actively search for you and find your site.

2. The people who you reel in to look at your site.

Both of these groups of people are targeted and will be perfect traffic for your site, but there is one which you should be targeting especially, can you guess which one? Yes that’s right, its group 1. These people want your product and they want to see your site. They haven’t just stumbled across your website accidentally hoping to find something else; they have actively searched for you, probably via a search engine but also by reading forums and blogs. While group 2 is still an important group which you need to take into account, the people in group 1 are those who you want viewing your site. In a world of social networking, blogging, and online communities, finding websites has become easier than ever before. So it’s important that people find your site, or at least know about it so they can try and find it.

[edit] Content Quality

The most succesful sites have very good content. It is very easy to read, very detailed in nature, well organized, and it has good information. An article or blog that has good content is a good candidate for other web masters to link to. You will see your traffic gradually increase over time without any effort from you. The internet will soon notice your quality content and begin to direct their traffic to your page or website. Even if you contact other web masters and ask them for an incoming link to your website they may often decline your request if your content looks bad. if your content is bad it makes their website look bad too. That being said write about soemething that interests you and have it proofread by professionals.

[edit] Social Networks

Utilizing Social Networks can bring a huge surge of traffic to your website overnight. Find a large social network site that suited for your site and stay active on it. Build your friends because the more friends you have the more eyes are seeing your link. Many web masters that have large sites don't have time to roam social networks so use this to your advantage. Post your website in your signature and in your personal profile. Join groups that you have interest or knowledge because you will answer questions thouroughly. If you impress the reader it is very likely they will click the link to your website, which will potentially make you money.

[edit] Wikipedia

Wikipedia can provide a continuous flow of targeted traffic. Getting an incoming link from wikipedia can be very profittable but it is very difficult keeping your link from not being deleted by moderators. If you have a very high quality guide or tutorial -- sometimes the moderators will not delete your link because it will compliment the original wikipedia article. The incoming links on wikipedia to your site will not benefit your page rank because they use "no follow" attributes in their links. You will get quality visits to your site which may lead to someone linking to your web page. So, it is well worth trying to establish incoming links from wikipedia.
